Sports Photography – Some great times
About 5 years ago , I did my final year as a Sports photographer, which took a lot of practice and time. It took me about 2 years doing non League football for the local newspapers and then I got a break with an agency on london to photograph Barnet in an FA Cup match on a cold and wet January evening, lets just say..I was not prepared.
In all the years that followed I was lucky enough to go to some of London;s top Premier League grounds and even the Six Nations at Twickenham for the England Rugby, it always seemed a glamorous job, but far from it. The bigger the game the more photographers, which meant you really had to keep an eye open for everything.
What sports photography taught me over the years, was discipline with the camera, rather than just firing away hundreds of shots and hoping for the best, it taught me to watch the action and almost be a split second ahead of what was going to happen and anticipate that shot.
I had some great years and got access to many events like the Boat Race, Tour of GB Cycling, even Horse Racing at Sandown and Newmarket, it certainly wasn’t glamorous , but some of the most memorable times I had in my photography career..
So for those who think I just photographed Weddings and Portraits…it was a long hard slog to get to be a Pro Sports photographer back then.
Some Images from those days…hope you like.
